In 1930, A. Yorke-Bramble invited three local enthusiasts
to meet at his house in Brighton, and from this the “Southdown Skysailing Club” was founded in June of that year.
Of these four people, Fl-Lt. Lee Roy Lowenson Brown, D.F.C., R.A.F.O, a Canadian war-pilot who suggested the Club title, became
the Club Captain and Chairman; A Yorke-Bramble, the convener, became the Organizing Secretary.
Brown designed a primary
glider which was built by members of the club in 1931. This glider was also known as the Southdown Club Skysailer.
