Type Description

  • Type 748 Series 1
  • Medium-sized low wing turboprop airliner with accommodation for two crew with 44 to 62 passengers plus two cabin staff. Fuselage was an all metal semi-monocoque fail safe structure of circular cross section. Passenger access was via a door located at the rear of the cabin on the port side, with crew and freight access via a larger door on the port side just behind the cockpit. The wings were an all-metal two spar fail-safe structure, with shielded horn balanced manually operated ailerons and electrically operated Fowler flaps. The leading edge featured pneumatic de-icing boots. The tail unit was a cantilever all metal structure of fixed incidence with manually operated elevators and rudder. The retractable tricycle landing was hydraulically operated. Two 1600 shp Rolls-Royce R.Da.6 Dart Mk 514 powerplants.

  • Series 2A fitted with a Large Freight Door in the port rear fuselage, opening aft along the fuselage side, and incorporating the passenger as its rear portion. A heavy duty freight floor with rollers was incorporated. The LFD could accommodate 48 paratroops in its military role.

  • Military variant with an upswept rear fuselage and rear loading ramp and a "kneeling" undercarriage, to meet Specification C.237 to the requirements of OR.370/ASR.377. The aircraft had larger four-bladed propellers than the 748, which required a greater distance between the engines and the fuselage, although the wingtips were reduced by 18 inches to maintain the same wingspan as the 748 Series 1. A dihedral tailplane was also fitted to keep it clear of the propeller slipstream. Two 2,970 shp. Rolls-Royce R.Da.12 Dart Mk.301 powerplants.

Notes

  1. Avro used Set Numbers during production to correctly account for sub-assemblies and other components to ensure traceability.
  2. Initial production was by the Aircraft Manufacturing Depot of the Indian Air Force, Kanpur. On October 1 1964, the Aircraft Manufacturing Depot was merged with Hindustan Aircraft Limited to became Hindustan Aeronautics.
  3. Eight aircraft used by the RAAF and two by the RAN for training navigation and air intelligence officers. Fitted with Rolls Royce R.Da.8 Mk.550-2 powerplants.
  4. Four aircraft, c/ns 1546, 1547, 1724 and 1725 assembled at Hawarden.
