History

George Percy Bragg Smith (Goodall and Tagg incorrectly use Bragg-Smith), an aeronautical engineer, was born in 1878 in New Cross, Kent, the son of Thomas Frederick Smith and Ellen Stokes Smith (née Bragg). The family having moved to Mitchum, Surrey, in 1911 he began construction of a full size automatic stability canard biplane, covered by patent GB190827812(A) of 16 December 1909, but it was not completed. The machine was shown in model form at Olympia in April 1911 and won first prize.

Though his full sized machine was never completed, he produced two flying models based on the design (one with twin propellers) that proved very successful in competition. George Percy Bragg Smith died in 1946.
