Type Description
- Type 170 Mk.I Freighter
- All-metal, high-wing monoplane designed to meet civilian and military requirements, initially to Specification 22/44 but eventually to Specification C.9/45 to meet the requirements of OR.192. The fuselage was a semi-monocoque structure of light alloy formers and L-section stringers, covered with a rivited stressed skin, also of light alloy. The square-section fuselage was clear of internal obstructions, with Tthe lower nose covered by a pair of large clamshell doors, for easy access to the main hold. The flight deck was elevated above the load space on the nose as to not obstruct access; the crew would enter the flight deck via a fixed vertical ladder on the side of the cargo bay. The aircraft was typically operated by a two-man crew, a first pilot and second pilot or radio operator; in addition, space was provided at the rear for a third crew member. The floor of the main hold was covered by wooden panels, designed to be easily replaceable in the event of damage; these were supported by a floor structure of deep transverse beams with a pair of longitudinal strips, strengthened by a support beam. The all metal, stressed skin wing was based on the pre-war Bristol Bombay, having wings of the same section and taper but with a swept leading edge and straight trailing edge, and two spars in place of the seven used in the Bombay. Spars featured a light alloy web attached to extruded flanges, while the ribs were either plate web with extuded flanges or of truss construction. The fabric covered ailerons featured tubular spars and pressed light alloy ribs. The tailplane, elevator, fin and construction was similar to the wings. The non-retractable undercarriage was a Dowty liquid spring type attached to the underside of the engine cowlings and braced to the lower fuselage longerons, and a tailwheel attached to the stern frame. Two 1675 h.p. Bristol Hercules 632/633 powerplants.
