  • Type 99 Badminton
  • Single-seat single bay racing biplane, it was built mainly from spruce, with steel tube in highly stressed locations. The main fuselage structure was a braced girder consisting of four longitudinals, vertical and cross struts of silver spruce, braced by steel tie rods. The top and bottom of the fuselage was covered with 3-ply wood. The sternpost of the fuselage was of box section with sides of silver spruce, and front and rear faces of 3-ply wood, projecting about 12 in. above the top of the fuselage. The whole fuselage was very carefully faired - the engine cowling forming the fairing back to the fireproof bulkhead; from fireproof bulkhead back to pilot's cockpit the "gravity" tank, "side" tank and oil tank conformed to the faired shape, the whole being fitted with detachable panels of sheet aluminium. The pilot's cockpit opening was faired in with sheet duralumin, the port panel being hinged along its lower edge to the top port longitudinal of the fuselage to allow of ingress and egress of the pilot. Aft of the pilot's cockpit the fuselage was faired with fabric covered detatchable panels, supported on closely-spaced fore and aft spruce stringers and formers. The wings were unstaggered and unswept, of equal chord but unqual span, with spruce spars formed by two channel section members, back to back, with a space of about 1 1/4 ins. between, in which spaces were fitted the anchorages for the external bracing wires and interplane struts. Ailerons were fitted on the lower wing only. The upper wings, featuring 2 degrees of dihedral, were attached to a streamlined pylon, while the lower, with five degrees dihedral, were attached to a short horizontal centre section, itself attached to the fuselage lower longerons. The arodynamically balanced rudder was attached directly to the sternpost, with no fixed fin. It had a conventional tailskid landing gear. One 510 h.p. uprated Bristol Jupiter VI powerplant.

  • Type 99A Badminton
  • Type 99 Badminton modified with a new centre section added to the upper wing, similar to that of the lower, new wide-span tapered outer wings with identical dihedral top and bottom, increased wing gap with the raised centre section supported by four centre section struts, and single wide-chord I-shaped interplane struts. One 525 h.p. uprated Bristol Jupiter VI powerplant.
