Type Description and Production Data

AX3 AX2000
AX3
Two seat, 3 axis microlight aeroplane, based upon the French Ultralair Premier AX3 designs, in turn a derivative of the original American Weedhopper 2 axis machine. It has a high keel tube running the length of the airframe to which are mounted all the major components (i.e. the engine, the wings and the empennage), and features a tricycle undercarriage arrangement. It has a side by side seating layout with a single centrally mounted stick and two sets of rudder pedals. The aircraft is fitted with a non-structural cockpit fairing and has forward hinged removable doors. There is a single 28 litre fuel tank mounted on the back of the right-hand seat. The main undercarriage tube is of composite construction. The aeroplane is generally constructed of D65S Aluminium tube (equivalent to 6261-T6) covered (on both the wings and fuselage) by "ULTRALAM" man-made fabric. There is a conventional elevator trim tab fitted to the aircraft. It has no flaps.
The wing structure consists of two round aluminium spars, one of which forms the leading edge and the other forms the trailing edge. Lift loads are carried by two wing lift struts, which attach to both spars at a point located at 65% of span. The wings do not contain conventional ribs, the profile being formed by battens. The spars are separated by two compression struts. The wing structure is braced by two diagonal wing cables which run from the wing root to either end of the outer compression strut, which is located where the wing lift struts meet the spars. The tips of the spars are separated by a wing tip tube, which is a light push-fit into end fittings on the spars. The spar end fittings are aluminium blocks which are riveted to the spars, each by two aluminium pop rivets. The wing covering is in the form of a single envelope which covers the entire top surface and approximately 2/3 of the lower surface as measured inboard from the wing tip, and is fitted by sliding over the tips is then pulled up to the wing root. One 52 h.p. Rotax 503 (AX3/503) or 64 h.p. Rotax 582 (AX3/582) upright air cooled engine driving a 2 blade propeller.

AX2000
Two seat, 3 axis microlight aeroplane, based upon the Cyclone AX3. It has a high keel tube running the length of the airframe to which are mounted all the major components (i.e. the engine, the wings and the empennage). It is identical in layout to the existing Cyclone AX3 and has a tricycle undercarriage arrangement, but with a lighter fuselage with miscellaneous structural changes. There are two fuel tanks providing a maximum capacity of 50 litres, rather than the 28 ltrs of the AX3. The main fuselage beam is of steel tube wire-braced construction. The main undercarriage legs are composite. The aeroplane is generally constructed of 6261 T6 and 7075 T6 Aluminium alloy covered (on both the wings and fuselage) by "ULTRALAM" man-made fabric. The two spar, double-surface wing has the profile formed by battens, rather than ribs. Compared to the AX3, the wing is now 100% double-surface wing with APS leading edge pocket pressurisation, and of reduced area. There is an anti-balance/trim tab fitted to the aircraft. It has no flaps. Most aircraft were fitted with the 64 h.p. Rotax 582/48 upright air cooled engine driving a 2 blade Ecoprop propeller, but some were powered by the 51 h.p. Rotax 503-2V upright or 60 h.p. HKS 700E horizontally opposed engine, as indicated.

Notes

  1. This aircraft was privately assembled in 1993, from a kit provided by the manufacturers. It was originally fitted with a Rotax 582 engine. However, after 3 months and 47 hours flying, it was fitted with a more powerful Rotax 618 engine. It is believed that this aircraft is a unique combination of this airframe and engine.
