Type Description
- J/5 (Adventurer)
- Three/four seat touring monoplane. As the J/1 Autocrat but fitted with 130 h.p. de Havilland Gipsy Major 1 powerplant and featuring a sloping engine firewall to provide space for a starter. Developed via a request from Kingsford Smith Aviation Services, to utilise large existing stocks of Gipsy Major powerplants in Australia, the initial modifications were confined to the shock truss and area forward of the cockpit resulting in modified cowlings. The first aircraft, a conversion of a standard J/1 airframe, was made under Auster Mod No.1442 and was designated the J/5A.
Subsequent production aircraft were produced under Auster Mod No.1527 and designated J/5. The main differences over the original J/5A were a strengthened fuselage, the use of the Auster 6 type undercarriage, new shock cords, improved fuel lines to give better clearances off engine accessories, improved breather pipe and an improved fuel tank construction to prevent bowing.
In Australia, the J/5 was initially known as the J/5 Autocrat but circa March/April 1949 the name Adventurer was sprayed on VH-KAD and VH-KSY. This was followed by the gradual disappearance of the name Autocrat as applied to a J/5. No other customer named this Model which was always just J/5 outside of Australia.
Auster Mod No.1727 dated 4 February 1949 increased the number of seats from three to four with a rear bench seat, but there was no change to the designation. [5]
- J/5B Autocar
- 4 seat tourer based on the J/5 with a wider rear cabin to accommodate the pilot and three passengers, wing root fuel tanks and a more rounded dorsal fuselage shape achieved by using wooden formers and stringers, along with a larger fin and larger, horn balanced, rudder. 130 h.p. de Havilland Gipsy Major 1 powerplant.

Notes
- C/n 2733, VH-BYE overturned on landing on 10 March 1969 and its registration was cancelled 26 August 1969. C/n 2735, VH-SAE (originally VH-BYF), was withdrawn from use 18 May 1964 and it went through several hands during rebuild, finally making its first post restoration flight in September 2009. It features the fuselage of the VH-BYE and the wings of VH-SAE, retains the c/n (2733) of VH-BYE, but the original registration of c/n 2735, VH-BYF!
- C/n 3136, VH-BYW, has been incorrectly identified as a J/5P, including within the Australian DCA/CASA records! It was originally built as a J/5L Aiglet Trainer but was converted to J/5R configuration in 1966 when 36' ex Autocar wings were fitted to the original Aiglet Trainer fuselage.
