Production Summary
Type 534 Baby
Single seat sports equal span, single bay biplane of wire braced fabric covered wooden construction. The fuselage, of rectangular section with an arched deck fairing, was of the conventional girder type, with longerons and struts of spruce and aluminium covering forward of the cockpit. The balance area of the 'comma' rudder was increased slightly to make it an accurate circle and there was no fixed fin. The main wing spars were of built-up box section, while the leading edge was of wood spindled out to a U section. The wing tips and the trailing edges were of steel tubes. The wing ribs were of the wood girder type, with box girder ribs taking the compression load imposed by the internal drag bracing. Ailerons were fitted to both top and bottom planes. One 35 h.p. Green powerplant.
Following a crash, the second Type 534 was modified to include a raised tailplane, tapered ailerons, a slightly taller, oval shaped rudder, a new oil tank without projecting filler cap, more streamlined inter plane struts and the pitot head repositioned on the top wing. These modifications were incorporated on all subsequent aircraft.
Type 534A Water Baby
Twin float seaplane version of Type 534 with an unbalanced rudder hinged to a large fin, and a slight reduction in lower mainplane span which imparted a slant to the interplane struts.
Type 534B Baby
As Type 534 with plywood covered fuselage, the reduced span lower wing of the Type 534 and return to the perfectly circular rudder.
Type 534C Baby
Racing version of Type 534 with reduced span on both wings.
Type 534D Baby
Tropical version of type 534, with all-steel engine bearers, oversize radiator, extra cowling louvres, slightly taller undercarriage, and a luggage locker behind the pilot's seat. Built to the orders of Col. E. Villiers.

Type 554 Antarctic Baby
Two seat photgraphic survey development of the projected Type 544. Limited shipboard stowage space called for swift dismantling and erection by gloved hands without rigging problems. Notes

  1. One aircraft modified by H.G. Leigh in 1920. The original wing was replaced with a short, conventional, shoulder-mounted wing with full-span ailerons and above it was a forward staggered stack of six very narrow chord wings of about the same span as the lower wing. The provenance of this machine is unknown, but there were a number of unused airframes in store, so it was probably one of these that was used by Leigh. It is unknown if the machine actually flew.
