Bristol Type 78 Fighter 'C' and Type 84 Bloodhound

Two seat biplane fighter, designed by Wilfred Reid and submitted as a private venture to Specification 3/22. A two bay biplane, it featured modest and equal dihedral on both upper and lower wings, and a somewhat small fin and rudder. One 425 h.p. Bristol Jupiter IV powerplant.

Two seat biplane fighter to Specification 22/22 based on the Type 78 redesigned by Frank Barnwell with a lengthened fuselage, revised tail surfaces, changes in engine thrust line, wing stagger and dihedral and revised wings. One 425 h.p. Bristol Jupiter IV powerplant. The first aircraft was of all-metal construction, fabric covered except the fuselage just behind the engine being aluminium. The system of bracing adopted was one in which there was no wire bracing in the inner bay. Top and bottom centre sections were joined by streamline steel tube struts, and the lift was taken by two relatively short struts on each side, running to the fuselage. The inter-plane struts were steadied by short horizontal struts to the fuselage. The outer bay was of orthodox form, with streamline wire bracing. All control surfaces were balanced, the elevator and rudder by horn balances and the ailerons mass balanced. The undercarriage featured a very wide wheel track, obtained by attaching the undercarriage vees to the lower plane centre-section. Armament comprised one fixed, forward-firing .303 in Vickers machine gun and one .303 in Lewis gun on a Scarff ring in rear cockpit. One 425 h.p. Bristol Jupiter IV powerplant.
